Publication Ethics

1. Introduction

Biology and Biotechnology Communications (BBC) is committed to upholding the highest standards of academic integrity in all aspects of the publication process. This Publication Ethics Policy outlines the ethical responsibilities of authors, reviewers, editors, and the journal in ensuring the accuracy, transparency, and ethical conduct of scientific research published in the journal.

2. Ethical Responsibilities of Authors

Authors submitting manuscripts to BBC are expected to adhere to the following ethical standards:

  • Originality and Plagiarism: Authors must ensure that their manuscript is original and has not been published elsewhere or is under consideration for publication in other journals. Proper citation must be given to all sources, including data, ideas, or words that are not original. Plagiarism, including self-plagiarism (reusing substantial portions of one’s own previously published work without citation), is strictly prohibited.
  • Data Integrity: Authors must present their research data accurately and honestly. Data manipulation, falsification, or fabrication is unacceptable. Authors must provide full transparency regarding the methods and data used in their research.
  • Authorship: All individuals who have made substantial contributions to the research should be listed as co-authors. All co-authors must have seen and approved the manuscript and the final version of the article.
  • Conflict of Interest: Authors must disclose any financial, professional, or personal conflicts of interest that could influence their research or its interpretation. This includes funding sources, financial relationships with organizations, or any other relevant affiliations.
  • Ethical Approval: For research involving human participants or animals, authors must ensure that appropriate ethical approval was obtained from relevant ethics committees. This approval must be stated in the manuscript, and consent from participants must be properly documented.
  • Acknowledgment of Sources: Authors must acknowledge all sources of funding, assistance, and influences on the research. All relevant prior work should be cited, and proper acknowledgment should be made for any data or ideas that are not the author’s own.

3. Ethical Responsibilities of Reviewers

Reviewers are vital to maintaining the quality and integrity of the journal. They must:

  • Confidentiality: Reviewers must treat all manuscripts as confidential documents. They should not share or discuss the manuscript with others without the editor’s consent.
  • Impartiality: Reviews must be based on the scientific merit and quality of the manuscript. Reviewers must not let personal biases or relationships with the authors influence their review.
  • Timeliness: Reviewers are expected to complete their review within the designated time frame. If they are unable to meet the deadline, they should inform the editor promptly.
  • Constructive Feedback: Reviewers should provide clear, specific, and constructive feedback that will help authors improve the quality of their manuscript. They should point out both strengths and weaknesses in the research and suggest improvements.
  • Conflict of Interest: Reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest with respect to the authors or the research. If a conflict of interest exists, the reviewer must recuse themselves from the review process.

4. Ethical Responsibilities of Editors

Editors are responsible for overseeing the entire publication process and ensuring that the journal maintains high academic and ethical standards. Editors must:

  • Fairness: Editors must evaluate manuscripts based solely on their scientific merit, originality, and relevance to the journal’s scope, ensuring that decisions are made without bias.
  • Confidentiality: Editors must maintain the confidentiality of all manuscripts, review comments, and any other sensitive information. Manuscripts should only be shared with reviewers, authors, and other editorial staff as necessary.
  • Handling Ethical Issues: Editors must investigate any allegations of unethical conduct, such as plagiarism or data manipulation, and take appropriate action. This could involve rejecting a manuscript, retracting a published article, or notifying the relevant authorities.
  • Decision-Making: Editors must make decisions based on the reviewers’ feedback, the manuscript’s quality, and the relevance of the manuscript to the journal’s scope. Editors are responsible for communicating decisions in a timely and transparent manner.
  • Maintaining Transparency: Editors must ensure transparency throughout the review process, including disclosing conflicts of interest and ensuring that any changes to the manuscript are made with full knowledge of the authors.

5. Ethical Responsibilities of the Journal

BBC is committed to ensuring the integrity of its publication process and maintaining the highest ethical standards. The journal adheres to the following principles:

  • Academic Integrity: The journal is committed to publishing original, high-quality research that advances scientific knowledge. All manuscripts undergo rigorous peer review to ensure that only scientifically valid and ethically sound research is published.
  • Correction and Retraction: If errors, inaccuracies, or ethical violations are identified in published articles, the journal will issue corrections or retractions as necessary. Retractions will be clearly marked, and a retraction notice will be published to explain the reasons for withdrawal.
  • Transparency in PublishingBBC ensures transparency by providing clear information about the editorial and review process, conflict of interest disclosures, and article processing charges (APC). The journal is committed to open communication with authors, reviewers, and readers.

6. Consequences of Ethical Violations

Violations of ethical standards, such as plagiarism, data manipulation, or failure to disclose conflicts of interest, will result in serious consequences, including:

  • Immediate Rejection: Manuscripts found to violate ethical guidelines will be rejected immediately and will not proceed to peer review.
  • Retraction: Articles found to have ethical violations after publication will be retracted, and a retraction notice will be issued explaining the reason for retraction.
  • Permanent Ban: Authors found to repeatedly violate ethical standards may be permanently banned from submitting manuscripts to BBC.

7. Appeals Process

If an author disagrees with an editorial decision (e.g., rejection or request for major revisions), they may submit an appeal to the editorial board. The editorial board will review the case and provide a final response within 10–15 business days. The appeal process will be handled by senior editors who were not involved in the initial review.

8. Policy Review

This Publication Ethics Policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure it remains in line with best practices in academic publishing. Any updates or changes to this policy will be communicated to authors, reviewers, and editors in a timely manner.
